Irises

A vase of these gorgeous flowers on my sunny windowsill were too tempting to ignore!
Approached this painting with a looser and more relaxed style than usual...a bit different but I had fun!!!

Light and Shade

I have been playing around with tonal values in two very different media this afternoon:

I have finished (I think...maybe...!) 'January Morning', a tonal study experimenting with Indian Ink and white acrylic paint.

I also found myself totally engrossed in an experimental collage using small pieces of torn newspaper to represent the light and shade in a study of Ted Hughes' Iron Man, based on the illustrations by Andrew Davidson, for a year 5 art lesson later this week!!

I am very tempted to develop this technique and attempt to incorporate it into a piece of my own work....

Getting Prepared...

Today I have been stretching paper and under painting canvasses...getting ready to be inspired!!

Yorkshire Sunshine

One of my favourite places to visit in Autumn is Yorkshire Sculpture Park, near Wakefield. We visited on such a beautiful, sunny day last October that I got carried away with my camera, giving me plenty of inspiration for when I finally got to my desk!

It's taken me a while to finish this one off (to be honest I could keep adding leaves here and there for ever more...)

Greek Balcony

On a recent visit to an art gallery, inspired by a painting of an interior by Annabel Mednick,
I remembered this photo which I took on a holiday to Greece in 1989!

I have tried to use texture and a strong contrast between light and shade to create a sense of the cool interior and the warm summer sunshine outside.....

WW1 Poppies

A relaxing hour spent preparing some examples for an art lesson tomorrow with year six children...a good excuse to ignore my ironing this evening!

Beach Huts

I have been working on this painting over the summer and am in danger of never declaring it finished!
(I still haven't completely decided whether to add more texture to the foreground...or not)

Rediscovering Watercolours

I have not painted with watercolours for some years but following a recent holiday to Northumberland I felt inspired by the magnificent scenery. I am a little rusty but really enjoyed rediscovering how tricky watercolours can be!
These little sketches were painted very much with my aunt, who lived and painted in Northumberland, in my thoughts...

And this is what happens when you get carried away with 'splattering' your watercolours, forgetting your half finished acrylic painting is right behind you!!!!

Beccles Town Art Trail

I have entered this painting in the Beccles Town Art Trail which is taking place during the whole of May.
The Beccles Art Trail features the work of 30 local artists in the windows of shops and businesses around the town.
The trail aims to raise money for the Link Luncheon Club at St Luke's Church.
My painting is displayed in Taber's newsagent (number 4 on the map)

Problem solved!

This winter I appear to have been suffering from "painter's block"....

This painting has been sitting (untouched and unloved) on my desk since October...this weekend I suddenly realised what I didn't like about it!

Apart from having used too much green, I realised that my choice of base colour was wrong.
So, I painted over the whole canvas in a thin layer of turquoise and it was instantly transformed!

I love it already and can't wait to start painting again.....

Spring Sketches

Since the beginning of the year I have been spending the little bit of 'art time' that I've had practising my drawing skills. I've especially loved rediscovering my lovely chunky graphite sticks...

Sunday, 27 October 2013

Today I will paint again!

I started this painting of the River Waveney in August and it has been sitting on my desk, gathering dust, ever since...

Inspired by the beautiful scenes during a long walk on a recent 'Snow Day'.
It proved quite challenging to paint this snowy scene...it almost matches the idea I had in my head before I started putting paint to canvas!

Bathroom Art

This is a commission...my brief being simply "turquoise squares & blobs" to hang in a bathroom.

Not really knowing how to interpret that (I'm sure everyone has their own idea of what squares and blobs could, or should, look like...!) I took my inspiration from Kandinsky's 'Circles'.

I really enjoyed playing around with the various shades of blue and turquoise. I found it a relaxing task, although it still required a surprising amount of thought to plan which hues to place where. I am very pleased with the finished product, hopefully my mother-in-law will agree!!!

Across Southwold Common

Inspired by a photograph I took as the sun was setting across Southwold Common one January afternoon.
I painted from the same image, in watercolours, a few years ago.  I love the natural purples and the reflection of the light on the water in the foreground and wanted to paint it again using acrylics....
